Web design for complex organisations
A marketplace theme can make a site look finished before its structure has been tested. For organisations with several audiences, services, languages or approval groups, the difficult work is deciding what belongs where and how people move through it. We settle those decisions before production.
The result is a design system that supports content teams, accessibility, search and future development. It can be handed to an internal team, another vendor or our development team.

GLC under the Ministry of Finance
330%
increase in qualified lead generation
Information architecture and high-value user journeys were re-engineered during a Liferay-to-WordPress replatform. The documented increase was achieved within three months.

01
When design should come first
When to engage us
01
Your development team needs an agreed specification
04
The website works, but people cannot find their way
03
A portal or service needs reusable patterns
02
Stakeholders need decisions they can approve
Where you need the production website as well as the design, web development can follow within the same engagement. Where an existing website is being structurally replaced, see website redesign.
02
The engagement
What we define before development
Information architecture
Page hierarchy, navigation and URL relationships shaped around user intent and organisational priorities.
User journeys and wireframes
Responsive wireframes that expose missing content, weak calls to action and dead ends before development.
Component and accessibility rules
Reusable typography, colour, layout and interface components, including their states and rules.
Implementation handover
Annotated accessibility, content and responsive rules that a development team can implement without guesswork.
03
Built into the system
When to commission web design before development
Accessibility
Design decisions account for WCAG 2.2 AA: contrast, keyboard access, focus, forms and semantic structure.
Search visibility
Stable URLs, descriptive headings, indexable evidence and useful internal links are agreed before templates are approved.
Build constraints
Responsive behaviour, media, component states and performance constraints are settled before they become development defects.
“It was a pleasure working with Ulement on our corporate and event portals. They were professional, highly responsive, and consistently delivered excellent solutions and successful outcomes.””

Common questions
Web design FAQs
Do you also develop the website?
Yes. Web development can follow the approved design within the same engagement. The two services remain separately defined, so you can appoint us for either one.
Is this the same as a website redesign?
No. A website redesign replaces the structure or visual system of an existing live platform and requires controls for URLs, content and accumulated search equity.
Is SEO included in web design?
Search-critical structure is included. Keyword research, ongoing content production, monitoring and ranking work sit under SEO services.
Can our internal development team build from your design?
Yes. The handover includes responsive rules, components, states, content behaviour and implementation notes. We can also review staging before launch.

You work directly with Julian Song from the first structural decisions through handover. If your development team is already appointed, the design is documented for them.
